CFMS’ Construction Crew

This week many of us felt summer was over, with Labour Day marking the ‘unofficial end’, and kids going back to school.  Radio programs are buzzing about the end of lazy days and getting back to routines.  I sigh for the passing of another summer, for those of us lucky enough to be able to be lazy, to vacation, to enjoy time with family and friends.  Not everyone is in this position though.

The GTA is home to over 6 million people, not all of who can afford summers at cottages or vacations to Europe.  For some of the population, it’s hard for them to just put a roof over their family’s head.  Habitat for Humanity is an organization that helps provide homes to those in need.

In a couple of weeks I, along with some CFMS co-workers, will be participating in Habitat for Humanity’s “Women Build GTA”.  The project we are working on is a single family home in York Region.  While CFMS is part of the construction industry, this will give the CFMS team members a unique experience to participate in construction from a different perspective.  Personally, while I have been on many a construction site, and also have participated in home renovation projects, I can’t say I have ever helped build a house from the ground up.   I am looking forward to the opportunity to experience something new and gain a different perspective of the industry I work in.  It is also rewarding to be participating in something that I know will make a difference to a family where I live.
