Mel James, President

Mel graduated in Wales with a higher national certificate in electrical and electronic engineering. He then spent five years with Sauter Controls designing pneumatic and electrical control systems in Europe.

Mel James After immigrating to Canada in 1970, Mel worked for Honeywell and MCC Powers now called Siemens. At MCC Powers, he designed and commissioned several hospital control and building automation systems, including Scarborough Grace, Kingston General, Owen Sound and Hamilton hospitals.

Mel joined Smith and Andersen Consulting Engineers in 1989 as their control consultant. In 1992, he founded CFMS Consulting Inc. to provide consulting services for commissioning building systems and facilities management.

The backbone of CFMS, Mel has grown the company from a small 2-person Toronto office to an organization that now provides commissioning services worldwide. Mel’s hands-on approach to managing projects, his sales and marketing acumen and strong leadership skills have earned him a solid reputation throughout the industry and make him a valued addition to any CFMS project.

Chris Aaltonen, General Manager

A graduate of George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, with a three-year diploma in electrical engineering technology, Chris began his career in the Physical Plant Department of George Brown College as a building controls specialist. While at the College, Chris managed the operations of a central building automation system encompassing 1.2 million square feet of building space. He also helped introduce a computerized preventative maintenance system as well as energy efficient building technologies.

Chris Aaltonen In 1994, Chris became part of the management team at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. His primary responsibility was the re-commissioning of an extensive building automation system, including improvements in facilities operations, contract management, and maintenance. When St. Michael’s Hospital assumed management and operation of the Wellesley Central Hospital in 1997, Chris’s management portfolio was expanded to include the Wellesley Central site, the old Princess Margaret Hospital, and Central Hospital.

Chris joined CFMS in 1999, where he now applies his considerable experience in building automation controls, facilities operations and facilities management. He has worked on projects of varying scope and size – most notably, Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Recently, Chris expanded his duties to include the management of one of CFMS’ Toronto divisions.

Chris’ unwavering commitment to clients and attention to detail make him a vital member of any team.

Wendy Collins, P. Eng., Divisional Manager

Wendy graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor in Engineering. She is also a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. Wendy began her career with Tour & Andersson as a control system engineer, where she was responsible for designing and commissioning control systems for new construction and retrofit projects. After that, she joined the Toronto School Board and was in charge of programming, troubleshooting and maintaining the building automation systems for over 100 schools.

Wendy Collins Wendy joined CFMS in 1994, bringing a wealth of building automation system experience. At first, she provided performance testing. But within a short period of time, she was in charge of the entire commissioning process.

Wendy has been the main commissioning services contact for the Simcoe County District School Board for over 14 years. Recently, she has become involved in LEED CI and EB projects throughout Canada. Wendy now also manages one of CFMS’ Toronto divisions.

Wendy has a thorough knowledge of the commissioning process, combined with strong management skills. She is an invaluable addition to any project.

Edward Trueman, P. ENG., Senior Project Manager

Ed holds both M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Engineering from the University of Guelph. He is a registered Professional Engineer of Ontario and a member Edward Trueman of ASHRAE. He is also a certified LEED 2.0 Accredited Professional of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Ed has over 20 years of experience in the HVAC industry. Prior to joining CFMS, Ed Trueman spent 7 years with Smith and Andersen Consulting Engineering. During that time, Ed was involved with all aspects of mechanical consulting, from concept to final design, tendering, construction site supervision, project management and project close-out.

Ed joined CFMS’ Richmond Hill office in 1993. He is a Senior Project Manager responsible for quality control assessment. He manages many of the larger CFMS projects, including several hospitals and LEED projects.

Ed’s vast experience, knowledge, ability to evaluate mechanical systems and troubleshooting skills make him a valuable asset to both CFMS and its clients.

Sethuraman Sundar, Senior Project Manager

Sethuraman graduated with a Diploma in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineering, Higher National Diploma in Computing and a Masters degree in Administration. He has over 15 years of experience in the air-conditioning service industry, facilities operation and facilities management. In addition, he is knowledgeable in the areas of design, project management, energy and building automation and control systems.

Sethuraman Sundar Sethuraman joined Optimira Controls in 2004 where he was Designer/Controls, Supervisor/Engineering and Manager Engineering. Optimira Controls is a leading independent turnkey supplier of integrated building automation systems solutions.

Between 1992 and 2004, Sethuran served as Chief Supervisor/Building Management System/West Coast Region at UAE Emirates Telecommunication Corporation (Etisalat). He led a group of engineers who were responsible for facilities operation and management, new and retrofit construction and the commissioning of mechanical and building automation systems.

Sethuraman joined CFMS in 2007 as a Project Manager. He manages new and retrofit construction, total building commissioning services – including Institutional, Hospital, Governmental, Commercial, Community Services buildings – as well as LEED NC and LEED CS projects.

Sethuraman’s vast experience in service, facilities operation, facilities management, commissioning, design, construction project management of building automation systems and building services make him an asset to any project.

Tom Newitt, BASc., Senior Project Manager

Tom graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1977 with a Bachelor of Applied Science specializing in electrical engineering. He has over 20 years of experience Tom Newitt in the area of controls installation and has been actively involved in numerous LEED projects.

Tom began his career at Johnson Controls Ltd., where he rose to the rank of Project Manager responsible for the installation of system controls. In 2003, he moved on to Optimira Controls Inc., where he served as s Senior Project Manager and was active in the design and programming of control systems, hiring and the coordination of installation subcontractors.

Tom joined CFMS in 2009 as a Senior Project Manager. His strong appreciation and knowledge of all systems that are required to produce a fully operating building, make him a valuable member of the CFMS team.

Anand Narayanan, Junior Project Manager

Anand Narayanan has a post secondary diploma in mechanical engineering and is a certified technician from the OACETT. He began his career at a nuclear power project where he was involved in fabrication and field installation of specialized industrial structures and pipelines. He then worked in the automotive industry in the areas of quality control, product development, marketing and service.

Anand Narayanan After that, Anand served as a system designer at Johnson Controls, followed by employment at In-Sync Controls, where his responsibilities included producing AutoCAD control drawings, inventory control, graphics and commissioning support and facilities operation.

Anand joined CFMS in Nov 2008 as a Junior Project Manager. His technical knowledge in BAS controls and mechanical systems coupled with his project coordination skills make him a valuable addition to the CFMS team.

Vanessa Leung, Junior Project Manager

Vanessa Leung Vanessa graduated from University of Waterloo in 2008 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechatronics Engineering. Shortly after, she joined CFMS.

Vanessa is currently working with all of the CFMS Project Managers to gain valuable experiences in all aspects of the commissioning process. She is also completing her studies towards a P.Eng.

Juriz Dziuba, B.Eng., Junior Project Manager

Juriz Dziuba A recent graduate of Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Engineering, Juriz’s final year of study focused on thermo-fluid systems and HVAC system design. He is a member of the PEO Engineer-In-Training program, completing his studies towards a P. Eng. designation.

Juriz is currently learning all about the commissioning process from CFMS’ experienced Project Managers.

Sue Wunderlich, Sales Support

Sue had over 20 years experience in sales, marketing and accounting prior to joining CFMS in 2003. Once she arrived, she dedicated a year to learning Sue Wunderlich about the commissioning process, while working extensively in the field to garner in-depth, hands-on experience.

Not only our Sales Support, Sue is also a partner in CFMS West. She is responsible for building our account base, working with our industry partners and preparing proposals. She also manages office administration, accounting and sales for the CFMS West division.

Sue’s knowledge of commissioning coupled with her strong business skills make her a valuable member of the CFMS team.

Kristine Quan, Office Manager

Kristine Quan has a fine arts background. She made the move to the world of engineering in 1997, when she joined the St. Michael’s Hospital engineering department as an assistant to the Director of Engineering and Plant Services.

Kristine Quan Kristine worked for over 2 years at St. Michael’s before taking a few years off to be a full-time mother to her two boys. While on sabbatical, Kristine continued to help at St. Michael’s Hospital – and she joined the CFMS team to provide occasional project assistance.

In 2006, Kristine came on-board full time at CFMS. Her job duties have included everything from field verification assistance to modifying our accounting systems. Kristine’s current focus is office management, along with sales and marketing.

Daryoush Marandi, Project Manager

Daryoush graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering while in Iran. He has 9 years of experience as an operating engineer in Power Plant and 2 years experience in commissioning of buildings in Hunter Facilities Management Inc.

Daryoush MarandiHis career began at the Shahid Mohammad Montazari Power Plant in Isfahan, Iran. After he was trained for 2 years in the power plant industry, and obtained certificates pertaining to the work he successfully completed, Daryoush was promoted to an Operating Engineer for the 800MW power plant. During working as an Operating Engineer, he gained in-depth knowledge, including: turbines, boilers, cooling towers, centrifugal fans, condensers, pumps, air handling units, chillers, generators, automation controls, facilities operations and troubleshooting skills.

After immigrating to Canada in 2008, Daryoush worked for Hunter Facilities Management Inc, (HFM) as a Project Engineer. Through that time, he worked on new and retrofit construction, as well as total building commissioning services. Projects included Commercial, Institutional, Hospital, Government, and Community Service. Daryoush has also been involved with LEED projects.

Daryoush Marandi joined CFMS in 2010, bringing with him knowledge and experience with the commissioning process, building automation controls, and facilities operations, as well as the operation of power plants. His wealth of knowledge and experience make Daryoush an asset to the CFMS team.

Allan Hearn, Junior Project Manager

Allan HearnAllan graduated from the College of the North Atlantic in 2009 as an Architectural Engineering Technologist, the focus of which lay on structures, mechanical systems and HVAC, both residential and industrial. As well, Allan did his final thesis on LEED certification.

He began his career at Tract Consulting, a landscape architecture firm in St. John’s, NL, but quickly made the leap to commissioning in January of 2010 when he joined the CFMS team. He has since been learning about the commissioning process from the experienced Project Managers at CFMS.
