Project Blog – Corus Quay

After not being down in the area for awhile, I was recently at an event down at Corus Quay.  Located on the Toronto Waterfront, it is home to Corus Entertainment. It has won numerous worldwide awards and is LEED Gold certified.  CFMS provided the commissioning for this project.

Growing up in Toronto, that stretch of waterfront was an industrial wasteland.  It’s hard to believe the transformation, or that that area was once a brownfield.  The Corus building is a gem of light, reflecting the water, sky and skyline back at you from every angle.  Being adjacent to the white sand and pink umbrellas of Sugar Beach is a bonus.  I heard someone complain about the view of the Redpath Sugar Refinery, but I think it creates an interesting juxtaposition to the old and the new, the industrial and the arts (as Corus houses  74 television feeds, three Toronto radio stations (Q107, AM640 Toronto Radio and 102.1 the Edge), three television studios, fully-digitized production facilities, an animation studio, a publishing company and several performance spaces).

Their website notes it as being one of the top 10 coolest places in the world to work – not surprising if you have ever seen the slide located inside!  Another cool feature is the 5 storey living wall.  Recycled and local materials were used – notably the reclaimed 1910 ferry terminal wharf.

I always enjoy when I am out and about in Toronto, taking a look at projects CFMS has been a part of, and feeling connected to positive transformation in my home town.  It is especially pleasing noting the number of LEED projects we have been involved in, indicative of the wave of change towards sustainability.

Corus Quay is definately worth checking out if you haven’t been – enjoy a meal at the restaurant there, take in a concert at Sugar Beach, or see if you can get in a trip down the slide!
