CFMS COMPANY PROFILE

It all started with a Welsh engineer with a vision. Mel James wanted to create a company that could help owners and developers organize the building process and give them more control over quality and schedules. In 1992, CFMS Consulting Inc. was born, and the company has been helping clients with third-party commissioning ever since.

Mel founded the company on one key principle: “Meaningful quality control is only realized through an inclusive team approach.” Our corporate mission statement, “partnering to provide quality control,” comes from that fundamental belief, and it’s a core value every one of our employees focuses on every day.

Over the years, CFMS has grown and expanded its services to meet market demands and client needs. We have provided commissioning consulting services for over 270 schools, 40 healthcare facilities and hundreds of institutional and commercial projects.

In 2012, CFMS restructured its ownership and management. The company is now completely owned by senior staff, which has secured the future of CFMS Consulting and allowed us to remain a true third-party independent commissioning authority.

ABOUT FOUNDER MEL JAMES

Mel James graduated with a higher national certificate in electrical and electronic engineering in his home country of Wales. He spent five years with Sauter Controls in London, UK, designing pneumatic and electrical control systems for building HVAC systems.

After immigrating to Canada in 1970, he worked for Honeywell and MCC Powers (now Siemens). He designed and commissioned hospital control and building automation systems for Scarborough Grace, Kingston General, Owen Sound and Hamilton hospitals. He has chaired the Energy Management Committees for BOMA and ASHRAE.

In 1989, Mel joined Smith and Andersen Consulting Engineers as a control consultant. In 1992, capitalizing on his industry experience, he founded CFMS Consulting Inc. to provide consulting services for commissioning building systems and facilities management.

Mel has grown the company from a small two-person Toronto office to an international organization. His sales and marketing acumen, strong leadership skills and hands-on approach to managing projects have been instilled within the company and have allowed CFMS Consulting Inc. to grow into one of the most successful and highly regarded companies in the industry.
