January 2016 marked my 10th anniversary of working on a full time basis at CFMS Consulting Inc. I can’t believe how time flies! Ironically, I am sitting at the Marketeria at St. Michael’s Hospital as I write this, and St. Mike’s is where I first became acquainted with CFMS, about 18 years ago. At that time I worked in the engineering department and CFMS had been hired for commissioning – a concept that was fairly new at that time.
I started my full time work with CFMS 10 years ago, when Wendy Collins (now CFMS’ president) went on maternity leave with her second child. I was returning to work after my own sabbatical after having my own children, and CFMS was a great place to land. The dynamic of a small office that felt like a family was a welcome transition. In my first year there, I spent a lot of time on the road learning all about the commissioning process though Mel James, and learned that the relationship with our clients is one of the most important elements to our work. Performing a job that leaves clients satisfied after a construction process is rewarding work, especially when the construction process can be something that is frustrating at times.
Since first meeting CFMS 18 years ago, a lot has changed in the construction industry, but the need for quality control is something that remains constant and will continue to be a necessity. Commissioning is now a commonly requested service. And CFMS continues to offer a great team to provide that service, whether it’s for LEED, renovations, or new construction projects, on buildings big or small. Not everyone can reflect on working 10 years at one job with such satisfaction, so I consider myself lucky to have been part of team that has provided me a happy work environment, and that I know provides a quality service to our clients, and so makes a difference to all the people who then inhabit the buildings we commission.
