Here is a look at “Take Your Kid to Work Day”, as experienced by Emily and Wendy:
Today was grade 9 Take Your Kid To Work Day and I had the pleasure of spending the day with my mom at CFMS Consulting Inc. I always knew that my mother was a professional engineer, but I never fully understood what she did on a daily basis. I’ve been in her office, of course, but all I’ve ever seen is her working on her computer and talking to people on the phone. I’ve never really gotten an up-close look at what she really does. Today I was able to get a small picture of her world. I was able to see some of her work on finished buildings and unfinished buildings, not just the office work. I learned lots about a few of the jobs she works on and more about what being a mechanical engineer is really about. I would like to thank the staff at CFMS Consulting Inc. and everyone else I met today for making today fun and educational. – Emily Collins, Grade Nine Student
Grade 9 Take Your Kid to Work Day…. Wow. Just another reminder how much quickly she is going up. Both my children have been to the office many, many times – how was I going to make this day different? With some planning I was able to show her some of the work we perform outside of the office. We witnessed some duct pressure testing on an active construction site, visited a client’s office and concluded the day with a little Building Automation point to point verification. While I don’t think she is interested in becoming and engineer, I hope she had a good day and was able to get a glimpse into the other side of our business. The Take Your Kid to Work Day is a great concept and while many kids may not have the opportunity to experience a career they are truly interested in, it can be a great parent-child time together. – Wendy Collins, P.Eng., President
