LEED – How Does Canada Rank?

It seems LEED has become a key word in Canada since the CaGBC began its focus here in Canada (LEED started off under the USGBC – founded in 1993 in the USA). It seems Canadians have been working hard since 2002 to be a world leader in LEED. I recently came across an article from the USGBC that ranked the rest of the world in terms of their LEED standing. While it wasn’t surprising that Canada ranks at the top of the list, I found some of the other statistics in the article interesting.

Here are some fun facts:

Canada, China and India are the top 3 (outside of USA) with a combined total of 13 million gross square meters of LEED certified projects! While that’s impressive, what I found also impressive is that South Korea and Taiwan held the 4th and 5th place rankings (respectively) – When you think about the size difference between Canada, China or India vs. South Korea or Taiwan… there is a pretty big difference! As the ranking is based on certified gross square meters, those little countries have less space to work with, so really seem ambitious in the space they do have!

Brazil has the largest number of certified stadiums (as they prepare for the 2014 World Cup Games), and the only LEED Platinum Certified stadiums in the world (outside of USA).

The whole of North America has a total of 242 million gross square meters of LEED certified space. I find that hard to even picture in my mind’s eye!

The article was “LEED Around the World” (you can find it here http://www.usgbc.org/articles/top-10-countries-leed for more interesting statistics).

On the CaGBC webpage I found out that Canada has certified over 1,000 LEED Buildings, and registered 4,000 – which ranks Canada as #2 yet again. It seems Canadians are pretty invested in making our buildings sustainable – everything from office buildings, homes, and schools are working towards LEED certification these days. I recall someone saying, around the time that LEED started taking off here in Canada, that it would never fly… It seems they were wrong!
