This fall sees the opening of a new elementary school in North Bay ON, Maple View PS. Named after the stunning landscape surrounding the school, Maple View PS incorporates the existing students of both E.W. Norman PS and E.T. Carmichael PS into one super school which opened this September.
Housing 308 students and providing 73 child care spaces, this new school is part of the Ontario government’s ongoing efforts to build and improve local schools around the province. The new school utilizes a 5 boiler heating plant to circulating hot water throughout the perimeter heating in the west, north and south wings as well as supplemental heating for domestic water and the glycol loop. The project includes 1 air handling unit providing tempered fresh / recirculated air to the gymnasium and 2 energy recovery ventilators capturing heat from the exhaust air to temper the fresh air entering the building. A variable refrigerant flow system has been put in place to allow for heating and cooling of different spaces as required throughout the school year.
As this school has a child care center that is open year round, it has made use of plenum dampers to close off the remainder of the building to the HVAC systems over the summer for energy savings, leaving the child care center serviced as required.
The main entrance to the school boasts a glass atrium providing plenty of natural light to both the main foyer and the adjacent library. Large, floor to ceiling windows line the classroom wings of the building, giving the occupants unrestricted views of the beautiful geography enclosing the site.
As hundreds of new students begin their year at Maple View PS, their appreciation for this warm and inviting new elementary school surely will not go unnoticed.
