Twelve Years of Commissioning for AJ Hearn

In January of 2010 I accepted a job with CFMS Consulting. Fresh out of university, I packed up my car and moved from Newfoundland to Ontario, kicking off my career in building commissioning. At the time I wasn’t sure what it was I would be doing, but it sounded interesting and gave me the opportunity to come to a city I love. As 2022 begins and I celebrate 12 years with CFMS, I would like to reflect on the top memories / projects I have experienced throughout the years.

The Team: Although the faces have changed periodically in the last decade, the atmosphere and integrity remains the same. Positivity in the workplace and quality in the field make the job fun and the feedback warm. CFMS has always strived for a ‘family’ feel, and I believe it has been achieved many times over in my time here.

North Bay Regional Health Centre: This was my first big project I worked on and my first road trip with the company. It was overwhelming at times, something to be expected with such a large project, but it was an excellent learning experience and my first foray into the healthcare sector.

Brooklin Community Centre & Library: Located just north of Whitby in Brooklin ON, this project was one of the more beautiful buildings I have had the opportunity to work on. With a mix of timber beams, glass walls and stone façade, this building looks like it was pulled straight from the pages of Architectural Digest.

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB): This is not one but dozens if not hundreds of projects over the years. New schools, old schools, portables, the list goes on. Each one has its own challenges but the process stays the same, allowing for interesting new experiences built on a bedrock of similarities.

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital: This project, completed recently during the pandemic, was incredible in its wide-ranging equipment, services and technology. As Canada’s first smart hospital, CVH incorporates up to the minute patient information to send out alerts to mobile devices, automatically open doors on the path to a patient in need, even schedule meals that are built around dietary restrictions.

District School Board Ontario North East (DSBONE): Last year myself and the president of CFMS Wendy Collins were given the opportunity to provide commissioning for a number of schools in northern Ontario. Although the drives ranged from 7 to 12 hours and most of the projects were during the dead of winter, it was wonderful to experience the small towns and natural beauty of our province. If I was to select my favorite, it would have to be Kirkland Lake District Composite School. Beautiful murals, paintings and eclectic interior facades adorn the hallways and lobbies of this midsize school. A full size wooden teepee buried in 3 feet of snow under a cold and clear night sky provided one of my favorite photos ever taken for our company Instagram and highlighted an enjoyable and challenging trip.

This was just a handful of the many great memories I have garnered working for CFMS, and I look forward to many more as we continue to grow and develop as a company and as a team.
