There are many ways to ensure a construction project is ‘successful’. But what makes a construction project successful? Different people working on the project would have different answers to define what ‘success’ means to them.
To the Owner, a successful project is one which satisfies the usage requirements, is completed on time, and on budget.
To the Architect, a successful project equals a satisfied client/owner, the conceptualized design translated to reality, and the project completed on time.
To the Contractors, they wish for the project to be completed on time, in order to protect their bottom line.
Although these are three different answers, there is a common element. All parties wish to see the project completed on schedule. There are a few key was to help ensure the project remains on time:
Team. One important way to keep a project on schedule is to create a construction team where everyone is working together. It cannot be overstated how important it is for everyone to come to the table with the common goal of completing the project on time. This sounds so simple, but how many times have you been sitting at a meeting where the team is not working together? Remembering your common goals can help.
Paper flow. Construction projects generate a lot of paper. The flow of paper (which can be shop drawing review, RFI or change notice pricing and approvals, etc.) needs to be completed is timely manner. This requires the effort of everyone.
Attitudes. We all know the difference a positive, helpful attitude can have in all areas of life. Negative attitudes, personal agendas, and posturing have no place anywhere, especially on the job site.
Problem solving. Sometimes mistakes are made, whether it be design, installation, or manufacturing. Working together will only speed up resolving the problem.
Everyone should walk away from a construction project feeling like it was a success. Let’s all work together to reach the common goal of constructing a quality building that meet the owner’s requirements. Let’s get the work done on time and on budget.
