Laurentian University Wins Award for McEwan School of Architecture
The McEwan School of Architecture at Laurentian University won the Ontario Wood WORKS! 2017 award for innovative building in Sudbury. The project was done in two phases - phase two of the Laurentian Architecture project includes for the West Wing and a North Wing, a steel-framed structure with mezzanines above the second floor. The two new wings include classrooms and studio space, a lecture theatre, lounges and office areas, as well as an inner courtyard and a public walkway. The new structures of phase two connect to the re-furbished historic buildings on the site, the old CPR Freight Shed and the CP Telegraph Building, which have also provided classroom, studio and office space since the School of Architecture opened in September, 2013. 'Cross Laminated Timber' (CLT) and glulam wood products were predominately used for construction - not suprising the McEwan School of Architecture won the Ontario Wood WORKS! award - as this was the largest application of CLT in a construction project in Ontario to date.
