Project Blog – Sagamok’s Biidaaban Kinookmaagegamik New School Building

Last week September 12 was the grand opening for Sagamok’s Biidaaban Kinookmaagegamik new school building.  The celebration included an opening prayer, passages, honour song, guest remarks, ribbon cutting, dedication followed by a grab-and-go lunch allowing all members of the community to enjoy the new space.

The 30,000 square foot single-story school design process was informed by 22 progress meetings and four classroom design meetings that included grades 7 and 8 students, teachers, parents, Elders, and other community members. By letting the community lead the design process we were able to deliver a school that was fully accessible, modern, sustainable, respectful of the environment, and most importantly respects cultural and spiritual values of Sagamok Anishnawbek.

The CFMS Cx Project Manager for this project was Allan (AJ) Hearn, and here’s what he had to say about our role:

“As the commissioning consultants for the Sagamok project, we assisted in verifying functionality and performance of the HVAC systems throughout this stunningly beautiful new school.

One of the more important parts of the commissioning process here was the Owner training. This provided the school staff exposure to equipment that differed from the old school, such as heat pumps, energy recovery ventilators and a modern security system.”
